Marina’s stardom

Marina is a Russian philologist (expert in linguistics and etymology) and the erotically-educational (“Intelligence is Sexy”), buxom-blonde, Russian-accented host of YouTube’s Hot For Words channel, where she takes word requests from YouTube viewers and discusses each word’s origin and meaning.”  Of Marina, The Moscow Times said:

"Marina exploits her blonde-bombshell looks to the maximum: She appears in her two-minute clips scantily clad, pouting and making doe eyes. This is surely the main factor in her success. However, while the number of scantily clad girls on the Internet is limitless, not all of them put so much intellectual effort into their success.”

Marina explains how she gets her over 400,000 YouTube subscribers interested in words:

"How else could I attract them to words? Everyone knows that sex sells."

CAA, Hollywood’s top talent agency and Vin Di Bona, the Hollywood Television producer are pitching a TV show inspired by "Hot For Words" to all the television Networks right now! And Marina, quite kicked about the idea, has been busy painting (Marina is an outstanding abstract artist with major NYC Gallery interest) and recording the same.

116 I EXHIBIT I JUNE 2013

As kids, many of us have been attracted to our teachers, and the Russian Philologist, Marina Orlova comes in as a hot addition to the list. By conducting on- line Philology lessons, she makes words and phrases worth learning.

When in 2006 she sent cat and dog videos to her parents in Russia through Youtube, she started researching as to why Google purchased it for $ 1.65 billion. At the same time, she saw many people getting famous through Youtube, with newspapers writing about them. While they didn’t make money, it was the fan following that intrigued her, serendipity, which introduced her to the tech world and the magic of Youtube that pushed her.

A self-confessed “terrible singer”, she didn’t even see dancing as an option to start her journey on Youtube. Thus, by explaining words and phrases she started posting videos every week and building her audience every day. “For a year I didn’t make any money. Then YouTube called me and told me to switch the category from “education” to “entertainment” and my life changed! It turned out that advertisers didn’t want to spend money on “educational” content, and BAM! I went  from  earning  $200  dollars  a  month  to $15,000! Fast-forward to 5 years later and half a billion people have watched my online lessons. I remember I got so excited when the first 120,000 people watched my videos. That’s actually the amount of people that live in my town in Russia!”

While she finds staring and typing on the phone throughout quite annoying, Marina confesses that she’s constantly on the phone even while having a bath. She says, “I don’t read the actual newspaper anymore as I have my twitter feed delivered to me as my own digital newspaper called “The Marina Orlova Daily”! I hate watching the ever so negative news. People need to create their own positive news. What THEY are interested in hearing; not what the media wants them to know.”

Ask her what women bring to the table that men don’t and she laughs it off, saying, “I think it’s funny how men believe technology belongs to them, that they have this “Let’s fix the problem” sense and think women are supposed to be in the kitchen and bedroom only. A man’s brains tend to perform tasks predominantly with the left side of the brain, which is the logical side. Women, on the other hand, use both sides of their brains because a woman’s brain has a larger corpus callosum, which means we can trans- fer data between the right and left hemispheres faster than men!”

CAA, one of Hollywood’s top talent agencies and Vin Di Bona, one of the biggest Hollywood Television producers are pitching a TV show inspired by "Hot For Words" to all the television Networks right now! And Marina, quite kicked about the idea, has been busy painting and recording the same.
